The Current Analysis of the Risk Factors for Bone Graft Infection after Cranioplasty
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cranioplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs irregularity or imperfection of skull after craniectomy for several causes such as traumatic or vascular insults. This is done to restore cerebral protection, improve cosmesis, normalize intracranial pressure, and provide an intact skull vault. After cranioplasty, delayed infection and bone resorption are two common complications and the estimated incidence of bone graft infection is ranging from 1% to 15.9% depending on the presence of certain risk factors. Infection may be associated with increased morbidity because of the need for removal of the flap, a course of long-term intravenous antibiotics, and replacement at a later time. Therefore, prevention for infection is thought to be most important. The risk factors of the cranioplasty infection may differ according to the authors and patients populations and there are many previous analyses of the factors influencing bone graft infection. But we need to pay attention to this matter as the current medical environment is ever-changing and the influencing risk factors are also expected to be changed. Therefore, we analyzed the cranioplasties done in recent 8 years and tried to identify the correlation between the infection and the predictive factors.

Long-Term Incidence and Predicting Factors of Cranioplasty Infection after Decompressive Craniectomy
OBJECTIVE The predictors of cranioplasty infection after decompressive craniectomy have not yet been fully characterized. The objective of the current study was to compare the long-term incidences of surgical site infection according to the graft material and cranioplasty timing after craniectomy, and to determine the associated factors of cranioplasty infection. METHODS A retrospective cohor...

Background and purpose: The common method of stabilization in noncancerous lesions of anterior cervical vertebrae is the use of interbody bone graft and instulation of caspar plate and screws which is followed by several complications, breaking or loosing of screw, damage to esophagus and improper fusion of bone graft, as a result, damage to spinal cord during fixing the screw and also expous...
متن کاملTiming of cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy for trauma
BACKGROUND The optimal timing of cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy for trauma is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine if early cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy for trauma reduces complications. METHODS Consecutive cases of patients who underwent autologous cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy for trauma at a single Level I Trauma Center were studied i...

BACKGROUND Cranioplasty (CP) is a widespread surgical procedure aimed to restore skull integrity and physiological cerebral hemodynamics, to improve neurological functions and to protect the underlying brain after a life-saving decompressive craniectomy (DC). Nevertheless, CP is still burdened by surgical complications, among which early or late graft infections are the most common outcome-thre...
متن کاملSymptomatic Epidural Fluid Collection Following Cranioplasty after Decompressive Craniectomy for Traumatic Brain Injury
OBJECTIVE Symptomatic epidural fluid collection (EFC) arising as a complication of cranioplasty is underestimated and poorly described. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors for development of symptomatic EFC after cranioplasty following traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS From January 2010 to December 2014, 82 cranioplasties following decompressive hemicraniectomy f...
